Lovegate.C Worm attacks Email

It seems as if these warnings never end. Be careful what email attachments you open—even if they look like they are replies to the email you already have in your system. It could be a new virus/worm.

Trend Micro representatives say the virus disguises itself as legitimate e-mail by replying to an existing e-mail message in your in-box, not simply by drawing on addresses in your address box.

The company provided an example of a legitimate e-mail message sent to an infected user, concerning something business related, that is answered by the worm with the message, “I’ll try to respond as soon as possible. Take a look to [sic] the attachment and send me your opinion!” Users will often click on this attachment, since it appears to come from a person they know, Trend Micro said.

Most anti-virus software allows you to update its virus definitions for free. Now would probably be a good time to do that. Read more about the worm at PCWorld.com: Leading antivirus vendors post inoculations for newest pest

Same Dog, Same Tricks

I?ve had several friends and family assume that I hate http://www.microsoft.com" title="Microsoft" target="_blank">Microsoft. I don?t. However, I do feel that the Bush Administration dropped the ball when the Justice department settled its case against Microsoft. The company wields a great deal of power ? and they don?t hesitate to use it in some underhanded ways. Right now Opera is the biggest commercial web browser competition for Microsoft. It looks like someone at Microsoft is back to the sneaky tricks. On MSN (Microsoft Network) sites, they seem to be sending broken pages to users using Opera. You can read the news story at The Register. You can also read Opera’s investigation of the problem.

Note: Just a quick update. It seems that Opera isn’t the only one compaining about http://www.microsoft.com" title="Microsoft" target="_blank">Microsoft. Sun and http://www.ibm.com" title="IBM" target="_blank">IBM both claim that Microsoft is only allowing information on their servers to be accessed easily by Microsoft branded portable devices like cell phones and PDAs. You can check out the Reuters story at Yahoo! Info on Any Device, but Only if It’s Windows

Man from the Shimmies

I don’t know how many people remember the Bill Clinton video that was aired at the Democratic National Convention where he accepted his nomination. Should I ever vie for the White House, I’ll probably use “The Man from the Shimmies /b>.” Oh, sure, it isn’t nearly as poetic as the “Man from HOPE,” but the picture is pretty powerful.

This is where I lived for three years after starting my Ph.D. program at UNL.

James's old house in the Shimmies

The picture has that “Grapes of Wrath” feel to it. The funny thing is that there was a term that was often used to describe the adjunct faculty that would travel from one teaching appointment to the next. We called it “Migrant Intellectual Labor.” Seems appropriate.
