School Progress — Fall 2004

Well, we were in DisneyWorld when parent-teacher meetings should have been taking place. I hope that does not reflect poorly on us. We are fairly pleased with Mason’s progress—though the things they note are often some of the same issues we struggle with at home.

Hello Keims,
Sorry Im slow! Boo at the Zoo nearly killed me. Mason is doing well.

Academically, he is putting sounds together and getting ready to blast off with reading…he just doesnt know it yet. He is very enthusiastic to work with and very sweet. Sometimes he struggles with making a work choice; hed rather hang out with the guys. He is thriving in the leader role, and this redirection pulls him out of mischief often.

Honestly, I think the babys arrival will help Mason by expanding his world a little. He is very capable and bright; he just likes to rush through sometimes so he doesnt miss anything! Math wise, we are reviewing the decimal beads and working with the materials. He loves the map work and the cultural area: pictures and folders and books about rocks and the earth.

He participates well in group and as I mentioned is a very kind helper. Often I invite him to help a particularly shy child because Mason loves everybody and is very accepting and kind. Really he is very socially articulate and can bring children in, in a way they feel unthreatened and accepted by one of the cool guys. I have also observed him work through a social crisis and lead the group in negotiating fairly. Impressive for an only child. After his initial emotional reaction, he comes through with very insightful compromising strategies where everybody wins. (which is very valuable on the playground)

Our goal for Mason is to lesson the amount of silly time and increase his self-directed-in-purposeful-activity-time! We are just getting him really interested in the work and will run with the sounds and making books etc.We always touch math and language daily but right now language is HOT! and so thats the focus.
Mason is a delightful child, thanks for sharing him with us. Please e-mail a response and we can still get together and chat if you like I just wanted to be certain and touch base, in case something came up.

Ann

Overall, he does a pretty good job. Still, there are some “silliness” issues that we need to address—issues that ultimately I am probably responsible for creating. :-)
