Winter Weather News

Aunt Margaret writes:

Well winter has arrived with a vengeance. I talked with Georgia last night. It was just snowing some there. She said if it snowed enough she might have a day off today. I did not get out yesterday. It is like a skating rink outside my door.

Over 100,000 people are without lights as the ice has broken tree limbs and hit electrical wires. This morning they are saying city wide there may be as many as 250,000 without electricity. So far, so good here. I was scheduled to go into offices today but will probably not go as they may not even be open. It is going to take a while to clear this out.

Georgia said Patricia has found an apartment in Omaha – if the weather permits they will be moving her this weekend. Joe is in Oklahoma and Texas and hit ice driving from Salina to Okla. City. He is supposed to be home by tomorrow night. It sounds like Kathy is still busy. Dona Jean has a basketball tournament this weekend so guess David and Janice will be involved with that.

I got a lot of work done yesterday – worked at the desk all day – cleaned out some files and ran a lot of stuff through the shredder – this paper work is incredible.

Just thought I would bring you up to date on the situation here. I called John’s yesterday to see if the power had gone out. Erin answered and said John had bought a generator since he doesn’t have any insulation in the ceiling in the living room and kitchen. That is an old area and there are a lot of trees so it was probably a good thing he got the generator.

Hope you are o.k.

An update – the news has just announced 270,000 are without electricity here – I called John’s – Claire answered – said they lost power about 10:00 p. m. last night. John had purchased a generator so they are o. k.

They had a big tree fall that just missed the house. Claire’s office has no electricity but John has to go in as the rehab hospital has auxiliary power – it is dangerous driving with the tree limbs falling and power lines down.

I heard this morning that Kansas City was not doing well. Lincoln has shut down most of its schools. The University is still in session but it takes quite a storm for them to cancel classes there. The Foundation is still open today, too. A little snow won’t keep us from raising money.

However, when I dropped Mason off this morning at daycare I found out he would be the only one there. All the rest of the families had called in saying their work was cancelled. It surprises me mostly because we didn’t get the ice Kansas did. Still, I guess the snow hasn’t let up. I shoveled the walks this morning and you can’t really tell I did anything.

Trish still went to Omaha this morning. The weather reports are saying the snow will continue into the evening. Some are even suggesting that a total of ten inches might be possible. Since it is so powdery, I would think that it would make the interstate rather dangerous to navigate.
